No record is much better than any record. Domestic Violence is different than most other misdemeanors, as it precludes you from owning a firearm. I would highly suggest that you appeal their decision. I am not sure how old you are, but having even a detention record could turn around and haunt you later in life. Police records can now prohibit you from getting jobs, and could also negatively impact you should you ever have another criminal case.
