Handling response to controversial facebook status?

Imagine a friend adds a controversial status message on facebook and his friends (whom you dont know) react negatively to that. You make a sympathetic comment on the status msg but then these friends begin to bombard you with hateful msgs though you never began speaking to them in the first place. Considering you're older than all of them, What is the diplomatic way to handle this?
